Local Company Patents Possible Treatment for SARS 4/26/2003 8:24:08 PM

(KSDK) -- A St. Louis medical researcher is investigating how common medications could help save lives in the SARS outbreak. Dr. David Moskowitz says physicians are trying to treat the virus, when they should be trying to treat the response.

Moskowitz is CEO of Genomed. He believes the problem with SARS is not the killer virus, but that host response, which involves t-cells and interferon gamma, is actually causing people's lung linings to fall off. He believes the use of sartans, drugs already used in blood pressure medicines, could suppress that immune response and save lives.

"We're attempting to make it as common as possible, because this is a very serious illness and if, in fact, everybody has been barking up the wrong tree, treating the virus, when in fact they should be treating the host immune response, then we can potentially save a lot of lives," says Dr. Moskowitz.

Dr. Moskowitz says he's e-mailed the CDC and the WHO about his discovery and has also applied for a patent.

He's emailed the CDC and WHO, and applied for a patent on drugs already used in blood pressure medication?

Is he related to Mr. Rappoport, by any chance?

I think the patent is for the actual treatment method for SARS... (not the meds used) - Read the company BIO - I looked it up tonight after I saw him on the local news. Maybe what he suggests might work, who knows...?

Nothing else seems to be working, it's worth a try before this becomes epidemic.

Weel, I've read the stuff, but I have no idea if it is anything.

At least the training of all the guys is top notch.

I am eager to hear the medical freepers on this.

"We have to suppress the immune response in order to save it"

SARS is a quagmire just like Vietnam!

This won't stop it from becoming epidemic, though. This will only keep people from dying (if it works). But you're right, they do need to test these things as quickly as they can.

If the treatment can be done at home, then that will free up hospital beds.
